Psychiatric Consultations
A psychiatric consultation involves a person meeting with a psychiatrist to discuss mental, emotional, or behavioral challenges they might be facing. By looking into the person's symptoms and history, the psychiatrist seeks to offer a diagnosis and suggestions on how to improve things, which might include medication, therapy, or certain lifestyle adjustments. This consultation serves as a bridge, connecting general healthcare and specialized mental health support, aiming for the person's overall well-being. Consultations are typically conducted in clinics. For an up-to-date clinical list, click here.
Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessments
In situations where the concern is not yet clear, or where a more individualised formulation is needed, a comprehensive psychiatric assessment is intended to help determine the exact cause of the person’s issues, and offer a tailor-made careplan. The assessment is spread over two sessions, over multiple hours, and follows the comprehensive assessment method adopted in specialised tertiary services in the UK.
Psychotherapy
Depending on the clinical situations, some patients may benefit from psychotherapy to complement their psychiatric care plan. With a focus on body-based modalities of therapy, this service offers clients individual and / or group-based therapy sessions, depending on their clinical need. Space is limited. Clinical urgency is also taken into account when determining earliest availability.
Capacity & Guardianship Assessments
A capacity assessment is a specialized evaluation carried out to determine a person’s ability to make specific decisions or manage certain aspects of their life, especially when there are concerns about their mental well-being. It is usually requested by a notary or the courts, and ensures that everyone is treated fairly and has the necessary support when making choices about their health, finances, or other personal matters. Typical requests include the granting of power of attorney, writing a final will, or when making long-term care decisions. Incapacitation and interdiction requests also fall within this service.
Psychiatric Home Visits
Home visits involve capacity assessments, as well as consultations, and are reserved for cases involving people who cannot leave their household, due to illness, frailty or because of other social circumstances. They are offered across Malta, but need to be booked beforehand, depending on availability. Home visits to Gozitan residences is limited to a prescheduled slot once a month.
Supervision and Multidisciplinary work
Supporting colleagues in helping mutual clients is a prerogative of any mental health professional when providing quality and individualised care. If you wish to discuss a clinical case, feel free to get in touch.
